Authorities reported that a bicycle accident in Nipomo took the life of a man on October 1. Police suspect the driver involved in the event, who fled the accident scene, was driving under the influence.

According to authorities, the fatal accident happened nearby Pomeroy Road around 11 a.m., when a 45-year-old woman driving a Honda Accord on Los Berros Road rear-ended a southbound bicycle, propelling the cyclist off of the bike and onto the ground. As a result of the crash, the bicyclist suffered severe injuries to his head, which proved to be fatal. Authorities reported that the bicyclist had on a helmet at the time of the collision.

Police ultimately located and detained the 45-year-old driver purportedly involved in the accident. Officers booked her into into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter, driving on a suspended or revoked license and DUI. The identity of the bicyclist was not disclosed during the immediate aftermath of the event.

Besides grief and emotional devastation, families who lose a loved one in such an accident must often cope with financial stress as well. If the decedent had been the primary wage earner in the family household, the financial losses resulting from the fatal incident can be crippling. For this reason, many bereaved families seek the representation of a personal injury lawyer.

In cases where a negligent driver was responsible for the fatal accident, the victim’s family may consider pursuing compensation through a wrongful death lawsuit. If the family prevails in the claim, they may be compensated for end-of-life expenses and lost earnings associated with the decedent.
