On Jan. 13, the National Transportation Safety Board announced its Most Wanted list for 2016 at the 95th annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board. It features 10 issues that the agency wants to see addressed in the coming year. The current list contains four issues that were part of the list in 2015 and six new issues included for this year. One of the top priorities is to add collision-avoidance technology for vehicles as well as reduce fatigue-related car accidents in California and around the country.

According to the president of the National Safety Council, there are approximately 35,000 deaths from car accidents each year. However, by continuing to make cars safer and smarter, it may be possible to cut accident deaths down to zero each year. The Most Wanted list is one tool that may be used to help achieve that goal. Increasing occupant protection and ending substance impairment in transportation are steps that make be taken to get closer to that goal in 2016.

Other issues that the NTSB would like to see focused on relate to better train and aviation safety measures. Specifically, the group wants to see the implementation of positive train control and making rail tank cars safer. Furthermore, increasing rail oversight is another goal to make transportation safer in general.

Those who are hurt in car accidents may be able to take legal action against the driver who caused the crash. It may also be possible to take legal action against that person’s employer if the accident occurred during the course ofemployment. Compensation may be available to help pay for medical bills and recoup lost wages or lost future earnings. An attorney may be able to negotiate a settlement outside of court, which may result in a faster and favorable resolution.
