What are the common causes of brain injuries?

Many residents of Alameda County and the greater Bay Area in California probably already know that a brain injury is a very serious matter. This blog has even discussed how even a so-called minor brain injury can have serious and irreversible consequences. Consequences that can cost a person his livelihood and even, to some extent, their ability to function.

Although car accidents are a common cause of brain injuries, brain trauma can happen after other types of accidents as well. For instance, a fall, even from a short distance, can cause a traumatic brain injury. This is so, particularly, with respect to children and the elderly. But, depending on the falling distance, the way the victim landed and other factors, anybody can suffer a brain injury from a fall.

One might not think of violence as a matter to resolve in the criminal arena, but it is worth pointing out that intentional acts are also a common cause of brain injury. A victim of a beating, a young victim of shaking or other cruel punishment can develop a traumatic brain injury. On a related point, athletes and other people who participate in contact sports or riskier activities may suffer a brain injury as well. Even if the criminal justice system is involved, sometimes, a personal injury case can also be filed.

Just about any violent blow or trauma to the head can potentially lead to permanent brain damage. If this blow happens through no fault of the victims, but instead because of someone else’s negligence, the victim may be able to pursue compensation for losses.
