Congress is currently considering a bill that would require trucks to have bars along the sides and front of the vehicle. These bars are designed to help reduce the risk of accidents.

In June 2015, the fourth floor balcony of a Berkeley apartment collapsed killing six students, and injuring a seventh. This week, the owner and property manager of the apartment complex reached a partial settlement with the families. This is the second partial settlement reached in the case. In May 2017, another partial settlement was reached with seven companies involved in construction of the apartment complex.
Georgia NASCAR fans may have heard that the family of Kevin Ward Jr., who died in an accident on a NASCAR track, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Tony Stewart on Aug. 7. The family reportedly accused the driver for being responsible for the 20-year-old's death.
Uber has settled a California wrongful death lawsuit brought by the family of a 6-year-old girl against a driver who was logged into the ride service and available to provide rides, according to court documents. The parties have agreed on a confidential out-of-court settlement, and representatives of Uber and a lawyer for the family could not be reached for comment. The girl was crossing a street in a crosswalk in San Francisco with her mother and brother when the fatal accident occurred on New Year's Eve in 2013.
A 27-year-old woman was taken into custody after she allegedly hit a pedestrian with her car and then fled the scene. Police were called at about 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 15 to the scene of the accident at Pacific Coast Highway and 11th Street. When they arrived, they found the 72-year-old victim laying on the road, and he was rushed to UCI Medical Center. The man was originally listed in critical condition and would later succumb to his injuries at the hospital.
With 15 prior lawsuits, FedEx faces yet another case in relation to an April 10 crash involving one of the company's trucks and a chartered bus in California. The incident left 10 people dead, including both of the drivers, and also involved a third passenger vehicle. The two occupants of the Nissan Altima were said to have suffered minor injuries after being knocked off of the road by the truck.
Authorities reported that a bicycle accident in Nipomo took the life of a man on October 1. Police suspect the driver involved in the event, who fled the accident scene, was driving under the influence.
