California pedestrians and car accidents

Posted by Leonard Becker | Jan 05, 2018 | 0 Comments

A driver recently struck and killed a 26 year-old pedestrian in California. The accident occurred just after 8 in the evening and is under investigation. Although we do not know the exact cause of this accident, it does provide incentive to pause and question how we can better ensure our safety while enjoying California on foot.

The following tips can help:

  • Stay alert. Keep your eyes on the road when crossing. Watch for oncoming traffic. Stop walking if you need to make a call, check GPS coordinates or otherwise divert your attention away from your path.
  • Use crosswalks. 64 percent of these accidents occurred outside of an intersection. Avoid crossing in the middle of the street. Wait until a marked crosswalk to cross safely.
  • Consume alcohol wisely. Pedestrians that consumed too much alcohol were at an increased risk of involvement in an accident. Likely because they were less likely to remain alert and aware of their surroundings.

How common are pedestrian accidents? Unfortunately these accidents are not uncommon. In fact, fatal pedestrian accidents in California are on the rise.

California's Department of Public Health reports that the rate of fatalities to pedestrians struck by vehicles has increased in recent years by 11 percent. Of these fatalities, 29 percent are children 14 years of age or younger.

What if I or my child is injured in a pedestrian accident? Negligent drivers that injure pedestrians can be held accountable with a civil suit. This can lead to monetary awards to help cover the costs that result from the accident. Contact an attorney to discuss your options.
