Serious falls: Tips to reduce the risk of injury

Posted by Leonard Becker | Jan 10, 2018 | 0 Comments

A fall can lead to serious injury. Serious injuries can result from a fall for any victim – regardless of age. As such, it is wise to take some tips to reduce the risk of injury that can result from these accidents.

Three tips to start applying to everyday life to help reduce your risk include:

  • Check footwear. A recent publication The New York Times listed this relatively easy step is the number one way to avoid a serious fall. Make sure you are wearing proper footwear. Do not wear ill-fitting foot wear or shoes that are not suited for the environment.
  • Adjust how you walk. If the walkway is slippery due to spilt liquid, ice or snow, take smaller steps. This will increase the ability to get traction. It is also important to hold handrails when using stairways. Even the most agile of us can slip and a handrail can help keep a minor slip on the stairs from becoming a serious accident.
  • Dial in. In a world where everyone seems to be looking down at a smartphone, take a moment to look up and scan the walkway ahead of you. Focus on your path to avoid any tripping hazards or unexpected slippery patches.

Although these tips can help reduce the risk of an accident, it is important to note that property owners are expected to remove or repair dangers that could result in serious injuries. A failure to do so can result in liability on the part of the property owner for the costs resulting from the injury. Victims of these types of accidents are wise to seek legal counsel. An attorney can review your accident and help you hold the liable party accountable for their failure to maintain their property.
