Mindblown: a blog about philosophy.

Why shouldn’t I accept my insurance’s first offer after a crash?

If you've suffered an accident, you might be hurting both physically and financially. It can be daunting to face the costs of repairing your vehicle and covering your medical bills. It can be tempting to take the first offer your insurance provider offers you in order to get the funds quicker, especially if you're already short on money. There are a few reasons why it's best to consult professionals before you accept it, though.

Hidden car damage

Sometimes after a crash, a car suffers internal damage that isn't readily visible from outside the car. In the worst-case scenario, this internal damage can lead to car failure later on, while you're on the freeway or far from home.

Let's say you accept your insurance's initial offer of $1,000. Later, the mechanic tells you that, because of the crash, you have to replace a whole lot more than you initially thought. This is going to cost you a whole lot more than $1,000, and you're going to have to cover it out of your pocket.

If you delayed accepting an offer from your insurance company until your car was fully evaluated by a mechanic, then your attorney could request that they cover the full and proper amount of the damage.

Delayed medical symptoms

Immediately after your crash, you might have felt nothing more than a minor headache or some neck pain. But days or weeks later, more serious symptoms could start to manifest.

Delayed symptoms are a real problem for victims of car crashes. Your medical bills might end up being much higher than you initially thought immediately after the crash. This is why it's best to get a full medical evaluation before you accept an offer from your insurance company.

If you consult a mechanic, a doctor and your attorney before accepting any insurance offers, you will be much more likely to receive the full extent of what you need in order to get back on your feet financially after your car crash.
