Car crash deaths have been on the rise

California drivers should know that there has been a significant increase in the number of car crash fatalities. This is according to the National Safety Council, which estimated that nearly 39,000 people died in 2019 in car accidents.

As for the reasons behind this increase, they may include the lax enforcement of laws against drunk driving, speeding and seatbelt neglect. In many states, failure to wear a seatbelt is not an offense that the police can pull someone over for, and studies have shown that about a third of all accident fatalities arise because of drivers who were impaired by drugs or alcohol.

There are other reasons for the trend. For example, improvements in the economy led to more people driving to work or going out for family trips. Then there are the dangers that have been connected with new technology. Higher speed limits in some areas may be contributing to more fatalities, too.

As for how to reduce car accidents, there are many theories out there. Some say that every state should begin with a mandatory seatbelt law and a ban on all phone use behind the wheel. Others look to technology like ignition interlock devices, which prevent drunk driving.

Most motor vehicle accidents are the result of human error. If victims of the negligence of another driver die, then the surviving family members could file a wrongful death lawsuit, but it may be wise to have a lawyer assess the claim. Legal representation may be especially important when the time comes to negotiate a settlement with the at-fault driver's insurance company.
